From what I've heard, every stage of sleep is pretty important, and in my experience, similar experiements have been disasters. I don't buy it yet.

There is a fair body of research that suggests that people only need a minimal amount of sleep if they eat properly and are in general good health. Personally, I only sleep about three hours per night on average. Every three or four weeks, I sleep in for around eight to ten hours when I feel like it. As long as I eat well and am doing interesting things, everything is fine. However, if you put me in a boring situation (e.g. sitting in a waiting room without access to my phone, book, laptop), I get tired very quickly.

mobile are you running on adrenalin or are you really in a healthy awake state?

I'd say I am in a pretty healthy awake state in that my career has gone well. I've been doing this for most of my life. At first I thought it might be genetic because my Father is similar (he actually sleeps less, even though he is in his late 60's), but several of my friends through the years have picked up similar sleep habits and a more recent friend has only slept a few hours per night for years, as well.

It should probably be added that I also meditate for about 20 minutes every day (or close to every day).

That's good. What kind of meditation?

I've heard about this quite a few times over the last few years.

More info here.

I'm jealous of anyone who has the kind of schedule that would support this.

I just read the schedule. It feels suspiciously like a diet. I would definitely hate it.

I have never tried the Uberman's Sleep Schedule so I can't really say if it works, but it does sound kind of "suspicious". Wasn't it on a Seinfeld episode?

I think part of living on less sleep is knowing your sleep cycle. Sleep cycles generally last between one hour and three hours, with the deepest part of your sleep coming in the middle of the cycle. It is important to make sure that you do not wake up in the middle of one of these cycles or you will drag all day. Knowing your sleep cycle is good for even those that sleep more normal hours. You can pretty easily figure it out by keeping a journal for few weeks that says what time you went to be, what time you woke up and how well rested you feel. Then, simply look for common multiples in the number of hours slept from days you feel good.

If you find out your sleep cycle is two hours, make sure you set your alarm to allow you to sleep for only even number of hours later (e.g. it would be better to sleep six hours than seven, if your sleep cycle is two hours.).
